Randall C. Resch

Born May 10^th 1952 in La Jolla, CA Randall Resch began his career in the towing and recovery industry in 1964 (at age of 12); working in their family owned gas station and tow company called La Jolla Towing. Randall worked as a tow truck driver until joining the San Diego Police Department in 1973, as an officer covering many facets of law enforcement including SWAT, accident investigations and eventually the department’s off-road motorcycle Tactical Unit. Randall left SDPD in 1985, and for four-years, was later editor of POLICE Magazine and book series Death Row 6, 7, & 8. His editorial experience introduced to him an increased desire of writing law enforcement narrative that subsequently led to safety oriented articles specific to today’s professional towers.

From 1986 to 1990, Randall owned Iron Horse Towing in Northern California, sold the business, and subsequently became general manager of three of San Diego’s largest tow companies serving law enforcement. In 2005, Randall became the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Tow & Service Instruction Supervisor overseeing the Emergency Road Service Training Department of 3,000 tow truck technicians and 350-contract stations in Southern California, Hawaii, Texas and New Mexico. Randall contracted as civilian instructor and senior off-road recovery specialist for Naval Special Warfare West Coast, training Navy SEALs to operate specialty vehicles in hostile environments.

Combined with his law enforcement and tow company management background, Randall’s been with American Towman as Operations Editor for seventeen-years. To date, he’s written over 400 monthly and weekly articles regarding tow operator safety, administration and operational issues. He additionally authored a 172-page Tow Operator Safety Course that’s approved by the California Highway Patrol.

Through the years, Randall’s trained thousands of tow company owners, tow truck drivers, dispatchers and law enforcement officers throughout the US. He’s currently one of six training entities approved by the California Highway Patrol for rotation towers in California and is a frequent seminar presenter at industry events.

Although no longer involved as tow owner or driver, Randall remains active in today’s industry as tow business consultant, driver/activist, approved instructor, writer, trainer and presenter. He’s also called upon as expert witness for lawsuits involving towers serving law enforcement and standard-of-care protocol.

Randall spent most of his adult life teaching police recruits and tow truck drivers, being most proud of passing the torch to a new generation of towers while reminding all towers just how dangerous their jobs are and is an advocate for tow operators to receive wages commensurate and deserving of their commitments, contributions and courage when putting themselves in harm’s way for the sake of a perfect stranger.
