Eric Hammond
Eric Hammond was born in 1939 in a small village in Warwickshire, England. After working for Land Rover and helping at his parent’s petrol station and café Eric was drafted to serve in her Majesty the Queens forces. Starting out in an armored division Eric was transferred over the Military Police side and that is where he was trained on dealing with Traffic incidents and safety.
Finishing his service in 1960 Eric then began his career in the automotive field joining his father’s business and toying with vehicle recovery. In 1971 Eric married Joy and they had a son who all became parts of the business.
Eric was a member of Avro from the beginning co-founding the Region 6 division and in 1988 was awarded the Recovery Man of the Year Award. In 2010 Eric and his company were recognized by the Warwickshire Police Dept. for 50 Years of service!
Eric went on to become the chairman of the Avro Benevolent Fund which helps fellow recovery members and their families with support and funds during a loss or time of need. Eric has been active in fighting to change the legislation and regulations which have burdened the industry for years. His fight has included and includes fair rates for services throughout the county. Eric serves on the Survive Committee helping to improve standards for operators through proper training. He is a qualified trainer and a Health and Safety officer within the association.
In 2014 Eric’s Company Fillongley Garage ran a campaign to donate a portion of every call run to the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Charity assisting those in need of transplants.
At the ripe young age of 75 Eric can still be found today preaching safety, attending AVRO council meetings and on large recovery jobs even though his son has assumed day to day duties of the business.
