Rich graduated from Central Missouri State University in 1962, where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, the Deans Honor Roll and the college track team. After graduation, Rich took a job with a major oil company and he and Sandy moved to the Chicago area for a few years.
In 1967, they happily returned home to Kansas City where Rich and a business partner opened two major brand service stations. It was here Richs acquainted with Holmes Wreckers and a young Holmes salesman by the name of Larry Palmquist. Larry was the person responsible for getting Rich and his partner into the Holmes distributor business. In 1972, Mid America Wrecker Sales was born.
With the towing equipment sales business expanding rapidly, it wasn’t long until the service stations were sold and Rich’s full time was spent selling wreckers and towing equipment. In 1977, Rich and his family moved to Denver, Colorado, where they opened a new Mid America Wrecker Sales. Although it was extremely difficult for them to leave family and friends in Kansas City, the move turned out to be a dream come true. Business continued to expand, and in 1986, he signed on with Century Wrecker as a distributor. His company was awarded Outstanding Distributor awards for the years 1986 through 1994 and in 1991 was voted one of the The Top Three Distributors in the nation in a vote conducted by Tow Times Magazine.
Active in the Colorado State Towing Association since 1977, Rich and his company have always stressed the importance of education through proper training. He also served on the Board of Directors of TRPC for several years, and belonged to TRAA, Wyoming Towing Association and New Mexico Motor Carriers.
Rich sold his company in 1996 and now has more time to enjoy his family, grandchildren and favorite hobbies of golf, boating and fishing.
