Mary Leigh Barbusin
Hall of Fame Inductee #356
Little Silver, New Jersey
Executive Director, Garden State Towing Association
Mary Leigh loved towing and recovery from her first interactions in 1996 when she was hired by the Garden State Towing Association (GSTA). She remained the GSTA Executive Director until her death in 2022. She knew more about the New Jersey towing industry than most towing company owners – understanding laws, regulations, and knowing who to contact, what towing company owners to turn to, and even the wizard behind the curtain.
Mary Leigh always went above and beyond when serving the towing industry – both within her beloved New Jersey and for the entire industry. She donated her time and efforts for years assisting and serving the Towing and Recovery Association of America and the International Institute of Towing and Recovery, serving on committees and boards for both organizations. She was an advocate for industry causes within her state – and was a huge promoter for the International Towing & Recovery Hall of Fame and Museum.
Mary Leigh’s passion for the industry is best exemplified when, about five years ago, the New Jersey industry faced tough regulations with regards to the Predatory Towing Prevention Act. The association had to brace for a tough and expensive battle. Mary Leigh proactively turned to GoFundMe – a social funding platform – raising close to $150,000 for the battle. She tirelessly worked the phones and social media platforms to garner support from both GSTA members and non-members. She was at her finest in battle – a true warrior for the industry.
